Trivia Fundraiser Success

It was a suitably loud and rowdy affair on the evening of Saturday November 29, at the Interchange Outer East trivia fundraiser night! The night was organised to help fund IOE’s family camps, which, in spite of the benefit they bring to the many families who attend, receive no government or ongoing funding. Seventeen tables donned their thinking caps and battled it out for bragging rights and the honour of becoming trivia champions and being rained in riches and gold (well…a few bottles of wine and movie vouchers, but you get the picture).

In the end it was ‘Team RaD’ from the Resources and Development Team at Interchange who took line honours. The other table coming away with a win on the night was the ‘Inmates of Interchange’ team, taking out the best dressed table in their orange prison jumpsuits and handcuffs (not indicative of life working at Interchange, I assure you!)

The night was a huge success, raising an incredible $10,000 for IOE’s family camps and giving around 150 people a fun night out, plenty of laughs and some bargains in the silent auctions and games.

Some of the highlights of the night were:
• Bids flying left, right and centre during the live auction, led by professional auctioneer Gary Seaye, from Harcourts Croydon. We thank Gary for volunteering his time on the night, ensuring us an entertaining and successful live auction.
• A 150 strong choir of sorts, belting out the chorus to Bon Jovi’s ‘Living on a Prayer’. No doubt the rendition could be heard throughout the quiet streets of Upwey and I’m sure the locals all joined in from their couches (or beds!). Not too sure about that but no one called the cops at least…
• Unbeatable skill on the bottle toss, with both bottles being won by the same contender (who just happens to be my dad!) on his first attempt each time. At one stage it looked like we might have a tie, and be forced to enter a ‘toss-off’. Out came the scientific measuring equipment (piece of paper and a pen) and the judges made their ruling. A bottle of scotch and a bottle of vodka – around $90 worth, for just $4! Not a bad effort!
• A table of hardened inmates and a table of (not-so-little) Christmas elves battled it out for the best dressed table. The ‘Inmates’, intimidating as they were, took out the title and took home the prize!
• The North South East West game had the crowd on their feet, running around the room trying to pick a winner. Some players went with the ‘stay-in-the-same-corner-and-hope-for-the-best’ tactic, while others charged around the room like bulls (after a few shandies) trying to pick the safest corner. Some made it to the final spin on their first $2 entry, while others had to buy back in over and over to keep their place in the game. In the end it was Interchange’s own Michaela claiming victory and winning the weekend away at Red Rocks Holiday House in Cowes. Thanks to the Fry family for donating this amazing prize!
• A moving video and photo presentation made by Children and Family Services Team Leader, Kimberley Hannett, filmed at this year’s Portsea family camp. The video highlighted the benefits of family camp by the families themselves, reminding us all why we were there and why we were all prepared to open up our wallets and give to the cause.

Thank you to a couple of very special Interchange mums – Merrin Ayton and Rachel Maybury, for volunteering so much of their time and energy to make the night possible. We also extend a huge THANK YOU to all the local businesses and individuals who donated goods and services in support of the trivia night. These items and vouchers were used as silent auction and raffle prizes.
