Last Monday a group from the Balanced Options post school program, Futures, headed off to Phillip Island for a start of year camp. We had a group of 7, including 4 new participants who have joined us at Futures this year.

Everyone seemed to have a great time and the week was very successful! We all took a day trip to Wonthaggi, where we visited the coal mine for a tour of the underground mines  –  cold and dark but very interesting. There were lots of questions asked and everyone learned a lot about the mines from this tour.

There were heaps of things to do and everyone seemed to enjoy them all – eating out at the Wonthaggi pub, going to the beaches, seeing the Nobbies, shopping at Cowes … The campsite where we stayed was awesome and had a big vegetable garden, animals, games and an in-ground trampoline. But by far everyone’s definite highlight of the week was learning to surf, with the surfing lessons run by the Island Surf School at Smiths Beach. A few people were a bit hesitant and nervous in the beginning but by the end everyone had caught a number of waves. We even had people standing up on the boards looking like professionals and wanting to do it another time soon!

Everyone had an amazing time and a lot of new friendships were made and it was good to see a new group of people becoming friends so quickly. It was also good to see them breaking out of their comfort zones to try new things which, as it turned out, they loved. A very promising start to the year!
