St Kilda Mums is a not for profit organisation based in St Kilda. Their primary focus is to re-home new and pre-loved baby goods, books, clothing and nursery equipment to families in need all over Melbourne. They have been collecting, sorting and redistributing baby and children’s goods since 2009. St Kilda Mums is run by volunteers and relies on donations from generous community members and organisations to provide at-risk families with the essential items they need to keep their children safe.

Interchange Outer East continues to develop its relationship with St Kilda Mums, utilising space at the Enterprises site in Ferntree Gully throughout each week to assist in the collection, assessment, storage, cleaning, repair and rehoming of prams, cots, clothing and assorted baby and children’s goods. St Kilda Mums work with and support existing social services and maternal health workers and therefore adhere to strict safety and quality standards to ensure the safety of the families they support.

Our Adult Services participants are learning to carry out safety and quality checks, clean and repair items and pack them up in line with strict quality standards, ensuring they are in excellent condition to be passed on to families in need. The group is also involved in the delivery of baby goods to and from collection points back to the St Kilda Mums head office. The staff and volunteers at St Kilda Mums have absolutely glowing feedback about the work of our participants, commenting that often prams and other goods are received from our group, checked in to their inventory, quality checked and sent out to families within just a couple of hours’ turnaround time. IOE program support worker, Matt Howard says this is a testament to how well their quality control process has developed.

I was lucky enough to ride along with the group last Monday and was impressed with the relationships that the participants have formed with the St Kilda Mums team. The group was warmly welcomed and quickly began unloading the week’s donations from the back of the bus. They all knew the drill and dropped off their wares before spending some time mingling and chatting with the other volunteers. The ladies from St Kilda Mums all shared the same sentiment – they love having the ‘guys from Interchange’ coming in every Monday. They are always friendly and up for a chat – and they do such a great job!

Our initial connection with St Kilda Mums came about after they has advertised for volunteers on the radio. IOE Coordinators Linda Hull and Cathy Handy went out to meet Jessie, St Kilda Mums CEO and our relationship has continued to grow since that meeting. We felt as an organisation we had something we could offer and give back to them. Our connection has expanded over the past year and we now run programs four days per week with our participants supporting this amazing charity and countless Melbourne families.

Interchange Outer East is also listed as an official collection point for donations to St Kilda Mums. What does this mean for families in the East? Drop off your pre-loved baby items (see here for information on donating goods: at any IOE site and be assured that your donations will be taken to St Kilda Mums to be passed on to other Melbourne families in need!

The St Kilda Mums Program

For those of you whose child will be participating in the St Kilda Mums project at Enterprises next term, here is a little bit of information about what we are doing with them and what St Kilda Mums is about.

This is a really exciting and new connection that has much potential for all of us.
We are thrilled to be able to support this amazing organisation and hope to become even more involved in the future.

We know that everyone is going to learn new skills, develop new relationships and feel directly connected to the people they are helping. There will be a huge sense of satisfaction when we are able to deliver back to St Kilda Mums a trailer full of prams or baby goods that the group have repaired, cleaned and taken responsibility for.

Please have a look at their website should you be interested in discovering more about them.
