The recent IOE camp for children on the waiting list for a volunteer host was a great success. Made possible through a Real Needs Community grant from Real Insurance, this camp’s aim was to provide some fun, memorable experiences for the children whilst giving their parents and families a weekend of respite and ‘time out’.

From all reports it achieved its aim! Held at Portarlington, the camp gave the children plenty of time for play and games at the house where they were staying, a visit to the Portarlington Pier and trip to Ocean Grove for an explore, play in the park and fish ‘n chips lunch. The camp highlight for all, though, was spending the Saturday at the Geelong Adventure Park, where everyone made full use of all the facilities.

This was the first IOE camp experience for some of the children, and their feedback has been nothing but positive. The feedback from parents has also reinforced the importance of the camp to them. Comments about; being able to spend quality time with siblings and knowing that their other child was in good hands and having an excellent time; having no extended family for support so really appreciating the respite provided by the weekend; A mother of a first time camper reported her daughter had loved the camp and how overjoyed she was that her daughter had been able enjoy experiences that were normally inaccessible to the family.

As usual, the volunteers who accompanied and supported the children on the camp were fantastic!

Thank you to the Real Needs Community Grants Program for making this camp possible. Visit to find out more about the Grants Program.
