Mentoring Thu

“Do you want to be a mentor to a migrant?” Volunteer Coordinator Marcelo asked me one day a few months ago. What an opportunity, so of course I said yes! This lead to me being introduced to Thu.  At out first meeting we were both a little nervous and unsure of what to expect.

I first signed up with IOE as a volunteer over three years ago when I was 14 and, at the time, thought there was only one way to volunteer – I have since learned there are many.

In the short time Thu and I have been volunteering together we’ve both become more confident.  It’s been great to see Thu come out of her shell, chatting to participants and meeting lots of staff.  A highlight was her participation in the soccer game during Sports Week.  Thu told us she had never played soccer before, but once she got on the field there was no stopping her!

Being a mentor has helped me become more confident and patient, and has taught me new skills.  I am inspired by Thu’s willingness to learn, by how hard she works and how determined she is to step outside her comfort zone.

Getting the opportunity to meet and work with Thu has been an amazing experience for me and I am happy I said “yes” to Marce.
