Thursday 9 March saw the launch of the Multicultural Carers Support Group (Manningham) at the Manningham Civic Centre in Doncaster by the Deputy Mayor of Manningham, Councillor Mike Zafiropoulos.

This group is the latest edition to IOE’s carer support group network which provides support, information and sociable outings for carers of people with disabilities across a large number of Melbourne’s eastern regions.

Frances Gammino, who worked tirelessly for the former Parent Support Network and who has been an integral part of the formation of this group, welcomed everyone to the launch saying:

‘It has been a dream of mine to see Manningham residents have a carer support group that is part of their local community. Previously, Manningham was the only local government area that was missing from our carer network, but not anymore.

Thank you to the Manningham Council for their grant (through their Community Grant Program) and to Jon Adams, Metro Access Officer, for his continued support in establishing this Multicultural Carers Support Group. A big thank you to Karen and Olivia from IOE for supporting me in this venture. I would like to extend my appreciation to Alex Mills from the Opening Doors Program, a community leadership program for social inclusion that aims to increase connections for socially isolated people living in the Manningham. Alex guided and mentored me through this wonderful program and taught me how to become a community leader. I completed the leadership course last year over a six month period and my project was to establish this multicultural carer support group in Manningham, focusing on and supporting all carers who have a child with a disability – especially those from a CALD background. A special mention to Shek Moi who encouraged me to develop this group and has continued to work with me in inviting many of the carers who are present today.

Most importantly, we need to thank you, the carers, who have come along today and who have shown support for this group from the beginning. I look forward to supporting you and many more carers in this community into the future.

Today, I am pleased to say that our dream is now a reality.’
