A willing band of IOE staff and Balance participants met at the Liverpool Road Retarding Basin on Business Clean Up Day, Tuesday 2nd March, keen to help ‘Clean Up Australia’.
We were allocated our gloves, rubbish bags and wheel barrows and teams headed off in different directions of the park. The Basin is a favourite place to walk dogs so there was an abundant amount of ‘doggy’ but very little rubbish. A bit disheartened at our lack of impact on the area we decided to extend our clean up to the car park and roadside.
A couple of hours and two full ute loads of rubbish later we left a small patch of Australia distinctly cleaner than we found it. Our haul included bags of household rubbish, clothes, carpet and more beer bottles than you would find in most bottle shops!
The sad part is that what we picked up will probably be replaced by next year.
