Working with the families and children at Interchange Outer East left such an impression on Jacqui Verhoef that she decided to donate the proceeds from her upcoming fundraiser in March to the organization.
It is a fundraiser with a difference. In an effort to challenge herself while getting fit, Jacqui decided to set herself a goal of running/walking/cycling 100kms in one month.
‘I thought I could do something more with this challenge and decided that this could be a fantastic way to raise money for a good cause – I instantly thought of Interchange Outer East.’ said Jacqui ‘It is such a fantastic organization that supports and enriches the lives of so many people with disabilities and their families.’
Jacqui worked with Interchange’s Flexible Care program for three years as a support worker, during which time she completed her studies at TAFE plus obtained a certificate 4 in Disability studies through Interchange’s training program.
She describes her work at Interchange as ‘of the best jobs I ever had, not only did it feel so amazing to be giving something back to others but I also gained much more knowledge and understanding.’
The bonds that Jacqui made with the families and children with whom she worked, plus the life enriching and character building experiences she had as a support worker, have stayed with her, influencing her decision to support Interchange through her challenge.
‘Nowadays I work full time in childcare.’ said Jacqui ‘That certainly does keep me on my toes but my experiences at Interchange have taught me to watch like a hawk, run like the devil and, that sometimes climbing on/up/over and through things is a job requirement!’
