Families will reap the benefit of almost $4,000 raised at Interchange Outer East’s Octablous event at York on Lilydale on Friday 14th October, 2011.

The Spring Racing Carnival themed night with live entertainment, mini trivia, fashion parade, silent auction and racing games attracted a good crowd who supported the event.

Octabulous event attendee Jess Van Arendonk said “It was a really fun night with lots to do and an excellent mix of games. The venue was really spacious and a lot of thought had gone into the decorations which looked amazing. I was really impressed that everyone entered into the spirit of the theme, looking fashionable, foxy and fabulous.”

The horse racing theme was a new spin on the organisation's annual social and fundraising event. Event organiser Kimberley Hannet said “The idea came from a committee volunteer who had recently enjoyed a horse racing game on a cruise ship holiday, and it all went from there.

“We knew it was time to do something new as the same style of event had run for the past few years and people were asking for a change. It was a great opportunity to listen to new ideas and come up with something completely different.”

The money raised will go towards Interchange Outer East’s 2012 family camp, which gives families the opportunity to enjoy a low cost holiday in a fun and supportive environment.

Family camp is not funded through any other means and costs the agency almost $40,000 each year. The agency acknowledges that its service needs to support the entire family, not just the person with a disability.

In providing family support Interchange Outer East offers its registered families an opportunity to attend a three day family camp once a year where accommodation, food and entertainment are provided for the whole family.
Family camp provides benefits for families, volunteers, staff and the agency as whole. It provides opportunities for networking and sharing information, as well as having fun. For some families it’s the only holiday they have during the year.
