August 2nd 2010
Interchange Outer East published the first edition of a new Bayswater community newspaper, the Bayswater Buzz, on Monday, August 2nd 2010.
The community newspaper aims to provide a voice for residents and more importantly a sense of community connectedness.
A need for this project was recognized from research conducted on 200 Bayswater mothers by the 'Mothers Living Well' project. The research showed a community newspaper was a popular way of informing Bayswater residents and groups and engaging them in community events and news.
Bayswater Buzz Editor Sophie Siegel said, “We want to create an inclusive community where everyone has the opportunity to contribute.”
The first trial edition of the newspaper will be delivered to over 4000 homes and businesses in the Bayswater area in early August.
The community newspaper takes approximately 255 hours to produce each edition and relies heavily on volunteer support and contributions.
The project is an initiative from Bayswater individuals and community groups such as Interchange Outer East, Knox Community Health Services, Glen Park & Arrabri Community Houses, local primary and secondary schools.
Interchange Outer East was successful in their recent application to the Knox City Council Community Development Grants 2010/2011 and were given $2,000 towards the production of the community paper.
On behalf of the Bayswater Buzz, Interchange Outer East has submitted an application to the Bendigo Bank Bayswater, Boronia and Ringwood Community Grants Program.
If successful this funding will set up the foundations of the paper and ensure its future success and longevity.
All Bayswater community members are welcome to contribute or volunteer their time. Volunteer roles vary from photography, writing articles to delivering newspapers. If you are interested in volunteering or sponsorship please contact Rebecca Gallaher on 9758 5522 or rebecca.gallaher@ioe.org.au
