Volunteer Rewarded

Bec with her Victoria Day award

July 2nd 2010

Interchange Outer East volunteer Bec Casey has been recognised for her contribution to her local community at the annual Ferntree Gully Electorate Victoria Day Awards on Thursday July 1 2010.

Bec Casey said ‘It's never something I'd even considered, I don't volunteer to win awards, I volunteer for the kids, the families, and the fun of it.”

Recreation volunteers contribute more than 30,000 hours of service each year providing support for families who have a child with a disability through Interchange camps and day activities.

Volunteering Victoria Vice President and former Volunteer Manager at Interchange Outer East Tara Cantwell said, “It’s really important to recognise the efforts of volunteers in our communities particularly youth, they’ve got a lot to offer and that’s not always acknowledged.”

The Ferntree Gully Electorate Victoria Day Award celebrates the anniversary of Victoria – declared a separate colony of News South Wales on 1 July 1851 and rewards the efforts of Ferntree Gully, Boronia, Rowville and Lysterfield communities.

Previous winners from Interchange Outer East include Kylee Taylor and Kieran Simpson.

Earlier in the year Jesse Farrelly received the Chirnside Park Shopping Centre Volunteer Recognition Award through The GPT Groups social investment program.

Members of the community were asked to nominate their peers, family or friends. Part of the award included a $200 contribution to a community organisation and Jesse chose Interchange Outer East.
