Interchange Outer East joined in the National Youth Week celebrations by holding the Youth Art Festival in Ferntree Gully on Saturday April 17th 2010.
The festival displayed a variety of art on 2 large tarps from Interchange’s Community Balance program and Yooralla-First Base on the side walks of Station St Ferntree Gully.
Interchange Outer East, Balance Coordinator, Marcelo Calderon said, “The event gave young people the chance to showcase their talents and join in with the workshops.”
Local artist led a workshop that saw the creation of various paintings including two canvases that formed the Ferntree Gully street scape. Youth came in throughout the day and added their touch to the painting.
The art work created on the day can be viewed in the front section of Community Balance - 115 Station Street, Ferntree Gully, until the end of May.
“We are excited to celebrate local youth and provide them with opportunities to get involved with their community. We hope that next year is bigger and better.” Marcelo said.
The theme of this year’s National Youth Week was ‘Live it Now’ and celebrates young people for the positive contribution they make to their communities.
Halcyon, Yooralla-First Base, Knoxbrooke, Knox City Council and the local trades association were involved in the organising of the event.
This event was supported by the Victorian Government, The Australian Government and beyondblue, the national depression initiative, who teamed up with NYW organisers across Australia to raise awareness of depression, anxiety and related drug and alcohol problems amongst young people.
