It’s Lovely Jubbly

There is always something different happening at IOE’s adult services – something new to extend experiences and opportunities.

During the second half of 2014, three separate groups of young adults, donned their aprons and had a ‘lovely jubbly’ (in the words of Jamie Oliver) time learning to cook at the Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food mobile kitchen in Bayswater.

The Bayswater sessions were organised as part of Knox Council’s ‘Healthy Together’ Program to help local residences learn the basics of cooking healthy food at home.

Being a Jamie Oliver initiative, the emphasis was on easy to cook and prepare, good fresh healthy food. During the 5 week course participants learned a variety of recipes, starting off simple with dishes like frittata, and progressing to more elaborate recipes, such as putting together a roast dinner.

The mobile kitchen was built into a bus – a fun environment with fully equipped benches and functioning appliances. Participants would first watch a chef / food trainer demonstrate the start of the meal prep and then they would go back to their benches to do all the steps, then back to the chef’s bench to watch the next process and so on. They also learned lots of Jamie’s famous kitchen short cuts and tricks and received all the recipe cards to take home.

From all reports the program was run really well and, at only $25 for the 5 sessions, was very reasonably priced. I think the best part about it was that those who took part felt like they were really learning something, as the teaching was done in such a hands on way and was run out of such a cool environment with approachable young teachers and volunteers. A real bonus is that both participants and support staff have said they are continuing to practice many of the things they learned on the course by cooking the recipes at home.
