Helping Out at Hedgend

A group of young adults from Healesville, who are part of Network, IOE’s Lilydale based adult site, have been enjoying their experience of volunteering at Hedgend Maze every Monday.

The Maze’s management has a commitment to both environmental and social issues and a culture of involvement and equality and has embraced the involvement of the Network group. Hedgend runs programs for schools where students are engaged in team building exercises, mini beast interaction and learning about permaculture, the environment and sustainability.

Our volunteers have been given the responsibility of working with small groups of students and educating them about working with chooks, including how to look after them and understanding their behaviours. They’ve also been assisting students with planting and environmental awareness.

All the students and teachers have been really open to the experience and the teachers have been great in taking a step back and allowing our wonderful group to have complete control. They have recently been working with students from Doncaster Primary School and we’re looking forward to possible future involvement with the school.

There are big plans ahead for the young adults to build skills to enable them to travel to, and volunteer independently at, the Maze. A plan that is fully supported by Hedgend’s management.

The Network group – Steph, Felicia, Jordan and Rhys – have described the experience as “Freaking Amazing!” … and it has been absolutely amazing to see!
