Happy National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week 2013 ran from the 13th to the 19th of May. Even though we LOVE our volunteers all year round, we like to do something a little special during this official week of recognition.

We consulted with a few volunteers to see what they thought would be a cool little gift to recognise the  great role rec volunteers play on activities and camps almost every weekend of the year. So, this year we sent over 400 rec volunteers a specially designed thankyou flyer together with a specially designed badge. Huge thanks to volunteers Jess, Brad & Samnang for their research, design and production the ‘thankyous’.

In conjunction with NVW we also began a project to compile one page profiles on all our volunteers. We use this one page profile system across the agency to support staff and participants and decided to extend it to volunteers as well. We’re hoping that, with the information provided on the profiles, we will be better able to support our volunteers in the future.

And … during National Volunteer Week we visited The Knox School to talk about youth and volunteering with IOE, as part of the Knox Schools Project, which aims to engage schools in supporting their local community. We’re currently following up on student enquiries about volunteering with us, which were a result of that visit.

This past year Rec volunteers have contributed over 28 000 hours of support to children and their families … and this doesn’t include the hundreds of hours of support provided by our wonderful host families who do such a great job every year. Nor does it include the hours contributed by IOE’s Board of Management and those who volunteer with IOE in so many other ways.

So, thank you to you all and we hope you had a happy and appreciative NVW!
