Grandparent Carers’ Program

A new program is giving grandparent carers and other carers aged 60+, a chance to have respite and a bit of fun and social interaction with others who are in similar caring situations.

Funded through an $8000 grant from Uniting Care Life Assist, the program had its first outing on June 2 – a day in the Yarra Valley lunching and wine tasting. Further activities are planned with a day down the Peninsula this coming Sunday and a visit to Melbourne Aquarium in July for carers to attend with their families plus a dinner and movie night out in late June just for carers. As with the winery tour, Interchange Outer East will be responsible for arranging respite care and support for any children/young people requiring care.

In the consultation process prior to planning activities, the carers identified a number of issues which they felt related to their aged caring role – financial hardship due to many being on pensions, social isolation and general issues of access and organisation. The program addresses all these issues with all activities being at no cost to participants,   providing opportunities for social interaction and being fully planned and organised.

The Yarra Valley outing was much appreciated by the small group who attended. It began with morning tea in Warburton, followed by wine tasting at Tarrawarra Winery and Gallery, lunch at the Italian style restaurant at Zonzo’s winery and finished with more tasting at Yarrawood Winery.

“I haven’t done anything like this, just for me, for such a long time” ; “such a relaxing day”; “so lovely to meet and chat others in a similar situation to myself” All such positive comments from those who attended, to reinforce the value of such a program.

Currently the Aged Carer program is being run as a once off program. It is hoped that further funding may be secured to allow for its continuation, given the demonstrated benefits and lack of current opportunities for ageing carers.
