Age: 18

Your Interests, personal attributes etc:

Doing outdoor stuff, watching movies and hanging around with friends. I think I am very enthusiastic, outgoing and I’m willing to try anything new whenever I get the chance.

How did you find out about Interchange?:

My next door neighbours are heavily involved with Interchange’s Balance, rec and flexicare programs. Their kids are rec volunteers and told me stories about the really cool stuff they do on camps and activities. I have been volunteering since I was 14.

How has volunteering affected your attitude to life?:

It has given me a greater understanding of differences in people - how other people think and why people may act or behave differently. I now am interested in getting my certificate in disability studies.

What do you like about being an Interchange volunteer?:

Its an amazing experience. Its an awesome way to make new friends with both other volunteers and participants. I’ve gained new understanding of how much disability affects people.

What is your funniest story about an activity you have done with Interchange?:

Kids say the funniest things. For example when feeding bacon scraps left over from dinner on camp to the pigs the young man I was working with asked “Why do pigs eat pigs?” Followed by, as the pig started to wee, “ Why is the pig’s pee fizzy? Is it lemonade? Can I drink it?” !!

Tell us about the friendship you have made with Interchange?

I have made many close friendships in my 4 years at Interchange with staff, volunteers and participants, many of which I know I will keep even after I eventually leave Interchange. The staff and volunteers make up an awesome support network both on and away from camps and activities.

Final words:

Do it. You’re in for an awesome time.
